- The IRIX 6.4 Indigo Magic Desktop differs significantly from
- the IRIX 6.2 Desktop in five areas:
-
-
- +o Objectserver
-
- +o Web Integration
-
- +o System Administration
-
- +o Documentation
-
- +o Desktop Behaviors
-
-
-
- 3.1 _O_B_J_E_C_T_S_E_R_V_E_R
-
-
- The objectserver has been removed from the Indigo Magic
- Desktop. Its functionality has not been replaced by any
- other technology. Note that the Desktop Message Bus (DMB)
- is _n_o_t a replacement for the objectserver. For more
- information on the desktop message bus, see the _d_m_b(_1)
- reference page.

-
- WWWWeeeebbbbjjjjuuuummmmppppeeeerrrrssss, or jumpsites, are a means to remember Web sites
- and access them directly from your desktop. Webjumpers can
- be copied, referenced, and emailed; anything you can do with
- a file icon, you can do with a webjumper. Double-clicking
- (launching) a webjumper starts the Web browser and points it
- at the desired location. Webjumper icons have gained
- functionality in IRIX 6.3 and 6.4 because of new Web-related
- features of the desktop.
-
- This new Web-related functionality includes UUUURRRRLLLL iiiiccccoooonnnnvvvviiiieeeewwwwssss,
- which let you view the contents of a Web site in an icon-
- based outline view. These views appear in the same dirview
- windows that you use to browse the filesystem. You can type
- universal resource locators (URLs) directly into the
- pathfinder textfield at the top of the window, or drag
- webjumpers into the icon drop pocket.
-
- All the links from the selected Web page will be shown as

- icons in the iconview (dirview) window. These can be links
- to other Web pages, to graphics, to movies, and so forth. In
- View As List mode, pages that contain links to other pages
- appear with a folded arrow next to the icon. Double-click
- the icon or click on the folded arrow to expand the view and
- show the links on that page as icons. Just as you would with
- folders, you can drag a Web page icon to the drop pocket in
- the upper left to "open" that page. Links to images, sounds,
- and video will show up as icons in the list. You can browse
- through a company's site and view or capture specific
- documents. When you drag an icon to the desktop, an
- appropriate reference icon will be created for you. Web
- pages create webjumpers, images create image files that you
- can open in the media tools, and so on. You can also Ctrl-
- drag these icons to the desktop to obtain local copies.
-
- Use the new magnifying glass button on the iconview
- (dirview) to toggle the MMMMeeeeddddiiiiaaaa PPPPrrrreeeevvvviiiieeeewwwweeeerrrr. When the Media
- Previewer is on, the contents of the Web site will be shown
- in the window below the list view. You can browse Web sites
- without having to use a browser. This view doesn't have all
- the capabilities of a full Web browser application, but it
- lets you gather information quickly and conveniently. When
- you click on document icons, the Media Previewer will
- display them in their appropriate format. Text, sound,
- video, VRML, Inventor files, and images can all be viewed
- using the Media Previewer. This is true for local documents
- on your system as well.
-
- These features are also available in a nnnneeeewwww ttttoooooooollllcccchhhheeeesssstttt mmmmeeeennnnuuuu
- ccccaaaalllllllleeeedddd IIIInnnntttteeeerrrrnnnneeeetttt. New items include "Icon view of a Web site"
- and "Icon view of an FTP site." These menus provide an
- alternative to the drag-and-drop icon gestures.
-
- The new Web-related functionality also includes ffffttttpppp
- iiiiccccoooonnnnvvvviiiieeeewwwwssss, which let you browse the structure of an ftp site
- and quickly move to the files you're looking for. This
- makes it easy to copy or reference files that reside on
- Macintosh, PC, or other non-SGI machines. You can also
- preview ftp files using the Media Previewer.
-
- The new Web-related functionality also includes the eeeennnnhhhhaaaannnncccceeeedddd
- OOOOuuuuttttBBBBooooxxxx ppppaaaaggggeeee. OutBox, SGI's personal Web server included on
- all systems, has been enhanced to make it more convenient to
- manage your OutBox Web page and easier to share information
- with others. Buttons for publishing, editing, and managing
- files have been added to the OutBox, so you don't have to
- find and launch tools to perform these functions on your
- OutBox page. The graphical design has also been revisited.

- IIIInnnnffffooooSSSSeeeeaaaarrrrcccchhhh is a new Web-based tool for finding help on the
- system. It gives you one place to go for information in
- application help files, "How Do I?" files, release notes,
- online books, and reference pages. InfoSearch offers fast
- wildcard searches with boolean operations and result
- sorting. Its index always reflects the current contents of
- your system. You can also search for help on remote systems.
- For more details, see the InfoSearch (iiiinnnnffffoooosssseeeeaaaarrrrcccchhhh) release
- notes.
-
- The Help toolchest now includes """"HHHHoooowwww DDDDoooo IIII"""" ttttaaaasssskkkk----oooorrrriiiieeeennnntttteeeedddd
- hhhheeeellllpppp. If you're not sure how to perform a particular
- function on the Desktop, check these pages first.

-
-
-
- 3.5.1 _R_e_f_e_r_e_n_c_e__I_c_o_n_s Icons on the background behave
- differently than they did in all previous IRIX versions.
- Icons dragged to the background will create a reference
- (symbolic link) to the original file. These icons can be
- renamed, moved, and dropped in the dumpster without
- affecting the orginal, but they operate just like the
- original in all other ways.
-
- The reference icon names are in italics and the device icon
- names are in bold italics.
-
- The Put Away item on the Selected toolchest menu is gone,
- because you no longer need to put away any originals.
- Instead, you delete the reference icon.
-
- To support these reference icons, the Get Info panel
- available from the Selected toolchest now has a Find
-
-
-
-

-

-

-
-
-
- Original button. Pressing this will open an iconview
- (dirview) in which the original file or folder resides,
- select (highlight) the original, and scroll the view to the
- original.
-
- Also, a script called _a_u_t_o_c_o_n_v_e_r_t will run automatically as
- part of _X_s_e_s_s_i_o_n._d_t the first time users login. It will
- convert old IRIX 5.3 and 6.2 icon layouts to the new IRIX
- 6.3 and 6.4 layouts.
-
-
- 3.5.2 _I_c_o_n_V_i_e_w__T_y_p_e_-_I_n__F_u_n_c_t_i_o_n_a_l_i_t_y__C_h_a_n_g_e_d To
- accommodate the URL and FTP iconviews, you need to press
- Enter after typing a directory name or URL into an iconview
- (dirview) window. This will display the contents of the
- directory or site.
-
-
- 3.5.3 _R_e_n_a_m_i_n_g__C_h_a_n_g_e_s__&__S_p_a_c_e_s__I_n__N_a_m_e_s You must now
- click explicitly on the name of an icon in order to rename
- it. This avoids inadvertently renaming an icon just because
- you typed something after selecting it. The file manager and
- the iconview now support spaces in the icon names.
-
-
- 3.5.4 _T_y_p_e__t_o__S_e_l_e_c_t__&__D_r_a_g__t_o__S_c_r_o_l_l In any iconview,
- including all dirviews and the desktop background, you can
- now select icons by clicking on the panel background and
- typing the icon name. For instance, if you have many icons
- on your background and you begin to type ccccuuuu, then all icons
- whose names begin with the letters _c_u will become selected.
- You can then open all those icons by pressing the Enter key.
-
- Iconviews (dirviews) now scroll when you drag a pickbox or
- icon near the edge of the window, or on top of the
- scrollbar, or when you drag a pickbox outside the window.
- The dragging accelerates the longer you hold the pointer in
- position on or outside the window frame.
-
-
- 3.5.5 _P_a_s_t_i_n_g__T_o__C_r_e_a_t_e__I_c_o_n_s Creating icons on the
- desktop is now easier. Paste any filename onto the desktop
- to get a reference icon (a folder or other icon) to the
- directory or file. This works for automounted pathnames,
- such as /_h_o_s_t_s/_r_e_a_l_i_t_y/_u_s_r/_t_m_p, as well as remote file
- pathnames in URL form, such as _r_e_a_l_i_t_y:/_u_s_r/_t_m_p. Paste an
- URL onto the desktop to get a webjumper icon. Paste a chunk
- of plain text onto the desktop to get a plain text file
- icon. For example, if you are now running the IRIX 6.4

- desktop, try selecting any of the following three items
- (click and hold the left mouse button and drag across the
- text to highlight it) and pasting your selection on the
- desktop background (move the mouse pointer over the desktop
- background and click the middle mouse button):
-
- Item 1) http://www.sgi.com
- Item 2) ftp://ftp.sgi.com
- Item 3) This is some sample text to paste.
-
-
- 3.5.6 _R_e_m_o_t_e__A_c_c_e_s_s You can access iconviews or the
- toolchest on a remote system even when a password has been
- used.
-
-
-
- 3.5.7 _M_u_l_t_i_p_l_e__P_r_o_c_e_s_s_e_s__o_n__t_h_e__D_e_s_k_t_o_p The desktop now
- uses multiple processes. Each iconview (dirview) has its
- own process, so if one happens to hang for any reason, the
- others will still respond to input.
-
-
-
- 3.5.8 _R_u_n__S_c_r_e_e_n__S_a_v_e_r This command has been added to the
- Desktop item in the toolchest. Use it to launch the screen
- saver whenever you like. If you have chosen a locked
- screensaver, this item makes it easy to lock your screen
- when you step away.
-
-
-
- 3.5.9 _F_T_R__C_o_m_p_i_l_e_r The ftr(1) compiler in IRIX 6.3 and
- later releases no longer supports the old ctr file format.
- Only the new fftr(1) compiler and its otr format is
- supported. All tools now use the new style oooottttrrrr format file
- typing databases (for example,
- /usr/lib/filetype/desktop.otr), created by the fftr(1)
- compiler.
-
-
- 3.5.10 _E_n_a_b_l_e_/_D_i_s_a_b_l_e__R_e_m_o_t_e__D_i_s_p_l_a_y In order to improve
- system security, the Indigo Magic Desktop now defaults to
- disabling remote display. That is, _x_h_o_s_t is off such that
- windows from remote system cannot be displayed locally.
-
- There are several ways users can override this:
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- - 6 -
-
-
-
- +o From the Desktop toolchest, select Access Files and By
- Remote Login. This will allow the specified host to
- display windows on the local system, only for the
- current login session.
-
- +o From the System toolchest, select Utilities and Enable
- Remote Display. This will allow all hosts to display
- windows on the local system, but only for the current
- login session.
-
- +o From the Desktop toolchest, select Customize and
- Desktop. Checking the Enable Remote Display toggle on
- this panel will allow all hosts to display windows on
- the local system. This will be restored each time the
- user logs in. (Each user can specify their own Enable
- Remote Display setting.)
-
- +o From the System toolchest, select System Manager,
- Security and Access Control, and Improve System
- Security. In this system administration task, the
- superuser can elect to Enable Remote Display for all
- users on the system. Because this configuration is
- less secure, it is not the default.
-
- Note: These release notes cover only those changes in the
- ddddeeeesssskkkkttttoooopppp____eeeeooooeeee subsystem from IRIX 6.2 to IRIX 6.4. For
- information about changes between other previous releases,
- see the appropriate past release's release notes.
